Detailed info

General information

Business School Netherlands has been functioning as an international business school since 1988, founded by Dr. D.J. Gerdzen. It is a recognised Dutch private higher education institution that is accredited as a university of applied sciences by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO), as well as the the Dutch Council of Training and Education (NRTO), Cedeo, the World Institute for Action Learning (WIAL), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), and the Swiss accreditation organisation eduQua.

Eligible students must be managers or management trainees and hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification. There are also a number of scholarships available for students wishing to attend BSN, including the Netherlands Fellowship Programme and 60 partial scholarships available from the Dick Gerdzen Foundation.

The Business School Netherlands offers one English programme, the International Master’s in Business Administration (IMBA). The IMBA programme is part-time, spanning 2 years with an average of 12 to 15 hours of study load per week.

It is designed to help those wishing to continue their education beyond the Master’s level. Students will learn the skills needed to solve today’s managerial and organisational challenges, while focusing specifically on their own companies. Any issues or obstacles faced will be solved by applying certain actions to produce a change in outcomes, according to the Action Learning approach used at BSN.

Educational approach

BSN uses an Action Learning approach to education. This approach teaches students how to discover and take actions that will benefit their organisations while implementing new plans and changes. Students learn together by creating small groups in which discussion and debate about relevant topics takes place. Tutors contribute to the learning, not by lecturing, but by imparting their knowledge and experience and facilitating the learning process by guiding students towards the right questions to explore.

The curriculum of the IMBA programme includes 6 in-house action learning projects (ALPs) and a final dissertation. Collaboration and discussion with fellow students is highly encouraged at BSN where the experiences of others are shared and provide an excellent source of knowledge. Students also participate in the international residency conferences where they can socialise with other students and staff while asking challenging questions, discussing theories, and sharing their experiences.

Assessment at BSN is based on the diagnosis of a problem, the plan of action, the field of research, the evaluation of the situation, and the implementation of a plan to solve the issue. There is also an assessment of personal growth as students will need to demonstrate what they learned from the project and how they would alter their approaches in future instances.
