NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences is located in the city of Breda, in the south of the Netherlands. Breda has approx. 170,000 inhabitants, 13,500 of which are students!

Breda is only 100 km from both Amsterdam and Brussels and with the new speed train it takes you only 4 hours to get to Paris.

In terms of culture and sport, Breda has a lot to offer and there are many students organisations - it is a great place to study! Moreover, life in Breda is cheaper than in big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Breda is a lively student city

breda students netherlandsBreda is a city where students make up an important part of the population. Breda has all kinds of things to offer.

There are cinemas and museums, many special events take place, and if you are looking for a restaurant or a pub you will be spoilt for choice. Breda has around 900 of them, which makes Breda the city with the most pubs and cafes per square metre in the Netherlands!

One of the advantages of Breda is that its social life is concentrated in the old restored city around the main church. Annual events like the Breda Jazz Festival, Burgundian Breda, and the Breda Run are all organized here.

The surrounding area is also buzzing with activity in terms of tourism and recreation. The city center is full of atmosphere, boasts a large shopping district and entertainment center, and has many old monuments and places of historic interest. Around the city there are plenty of quiet areas of natural beauty.

NHTV Breda University

NHTV University has a modern approach on studying: students do not study theory individually but work on practical assignments in groups, so-called “problem-based learning”.

The university also has training companies in which students can put theory into practice. Moreover, all students do an internship for 1 semester at least. Currently, NHTV has approx. 6,500 students from over 50 countries, who join each other in mixed classes. This means you will not only learn about the Dutch culture, but also about the cultures of your classmates!

University of Twente / Saw teeth make wind turbines quieter

25 September 2009 at 21:46

Placing saw teeth on the blades of wind turbines is now possible. The saw teeth are designed by Stefan Oerlemans of the University of Twente and the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR).

Rotating wind turbine blades make a characteristic whooshing sound. This noise often annoys those living nearby, so wind turbines are not always operating at full capacity and plans for new wind turbines are frequently rejected.

Stefan Oerlemans, PhD candidate at the Twente of University and employee of the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR), researched the sounds caused by wind turbines and created a solution to halve the noise without loss of energy.

To achieve noise reduction, saw teeth were placed on the back edge of the outer quarter of the blades (see figure).
