Utrecht University: best university in NL
Utrecht University can claim to be ‘the best university in the Netherlands’. This is based on the prestigious ‘Academic Ranking of World Universities’, once again compiled by the University of Shanghai this year. Utrecht holds the 47th place worldwide and is 9th in Europe.Only one other Dutch university, Leiden University (#76), scored in the top 100. Most other Dutch universities are ranked between 101st and 200th. Utrecht University has dropped five places compared to its 2007 ranking.
Key criteria
Researchers in Shanghai evaluated over 2,000 institutions offering university-level education. Key rating criteria include the number of times university staff are cited in scientific journals and the number of distinctions bestowed on university staff and graduates. Utrecht University scores especially high in the citation indexes that are used. With respect to this criterion, Utrecht University is on par with some universities in the Top 20.
List leaders
Harvard University in the United States continues to occupy the top-ranking position. Second and third place are also filled by American institutions, namely Stanford and Berkeley. The top European institution on the list is the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom, appearing in fourth place.
