Maastricht University: Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs confirms quality
Maastricht University (UM) remains a leading Dutch university, according to the Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs 2009. Compiled annually by an independent team from the Hoger Onderwijs Persbureau (Higher Education Press Office), this guide to higher education helps high school students choose a study programme. Like last year, UM has come in third in the overall ranking of the 14 Dutch universities after Wageningen University (1) and the Open University of the Netherlands (2). In the category 'medium-sized universities', UM has been ranked first, before Tilburg and Rotterdam.
The Keuzegids rankings are formed on the basis of students' judgements (50%) and experts' judgements, contact hours with lecturers and percentages of graduates (50%).
Of the 15 UM programmes assessed, six are considered the best in the Netherlands: European Studies, Tax Law, Econometrics, Fiscal Economics, International Business and Knowledge Engineering. Second places were awarded to the University College Maastricht, International Law, Economics, Psychology, Medicine and Molecular Life Sciences. Arts and Culture comes in third, and Dutch Law and Health Sciences fourth.
Rector Professor Gerard Mols is delighted at UM's strong performance. "I'm proud that Maastricht University belongs to the top in the Netherlands once again. Although it has been for several years in a row, you never tire of success. I see it as a wonderful result of our focus on stimulating and developing talent. In Maastricht, that's in our genes."
In other rankings, too, UM regularly scores well, with the first four programmes included in the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) ranking last year ending up among the top, and UM placing a respectable 111th in the British THES ranking for universities worldwide.
