5 Dutch students start space company

Five young entrepreneurs who just graduated from the Delft University of Technology have started up their own space company: Innovative Solutions In Space. ISIS plans to organise low-cost space missions with ultra small satellites. On 8 December 2005, the students’ business idea won them a prize for one of the ten most promising and innovative ideas entered in the first round of the Dutch National Business Plan competition New Venture. Top 50 European Business Schools face each other

Top 50 European Business Schools Go Head to Head in the European Business Schools Case Challenge 2006 - 2007 Teams from the 50 top ranked(i) European business schools are being invited to face each other, probably for the first time,in a challenge to test their members'potential as future business leaders.45 schools have been invited each to send a team to the qualifying round in Geneva,London, Manchester and Paris in April 2006. The top 5 ranked schools: London Business School, INSEAD, IMD, IESE and Instituto de Empresa qualify automatically for the final. Sixteen schools will compete in the final, which will be hosted by INSEAD, Fontainebleau in April 2007. Finalists will be announced in June 2006. Read more

Huygens Scholarship Programme launched

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has launched a new scholarship programme. The Huygens Scholarship Programme (HSP) will welcome its first students in the 2006-2007 academic year. The new scholarship programme incorporates the current Huygens Programme and the Talent Programme. Read more

Promotion of education in the Caucasus and Central Asia

In Central Asia and the Caucasus, there is generally little information available about study opportunities in Europe. Students look primarily towards the United States. The European project ‘Promoting European Higher Education through Education Advising Centres Network (PEHEEACN) aims to raise the profile and the appeal of European higher education throughout the region. Nuffic is also involved in the project, which consists of four training sessions. Read more

Dutch universities climb the world rankings

Ten Dutch universities can be found this year in the top 200 universities in the world. The Netherlands is the only European country to have ten universities in the top 200. It is the second time that the top 200 list has been published by the renowned Times Higher Education Supplement. The highest ranking Dutch university was Delft University of Technology in 53rd place. This means that Delft has now overtaken Erasmus University Rotterdam, which itself climbed from 64th to 57th place. Still in first place is the so far unbeaten Harvard. Read more

Bachelor's-master's structure

The bachelor’s-master’s structure is having an adverse effect on the internationalization of education. This is the conclusion of the Dutch Education Council in its advice to the Government entitled Internationalization Agenda for Education 2006-2011. Read more

More money for internationalization

The Ministry of Education will be investing 5 million euros next year in developing international centres of excellence. From 2010, the Ministry hopes to increase the number of top students coming to the Netherlands each year by 650. Read more

Expected rise in tuition fees

Prospective students are urgently advised of the following: Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students are expected to rise considerably in the near future. This applies both to study programmes taught in English and to those taught in Dutch. Unfortunately, as in other countries in Europe (eg Sweden, Finland and Denmark), the Dutch government has decided to cease government funding for non-EU/EEA students. Read more

Relatively few students come to study in the Netherlands from other countries. This is the conclusion of Education at a Glance, the annual education report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Read more

More students studying Chinese and Japanese

The current level of interest in China as an economic and political superpower has had a knock-on effect on numbers of students studying Chinese. The degree in Chinese offered by Leiden University has seen a strong rise in enrolments. This year, 74 students enrolled on the programme, compared to less than 40 last year. Read more
