Recent university graduates have fewer and fewer problems finding a job quickly. However, their salaries remained about the same in 2005, while their purchasing power decreased. This was reported in the news magazine Elsevier in their recent issue on the job market. The figures were based on a survey of almost ten thousand first-time employees. The survey covers their position on the job market in 2005 and the first two months of 2006, leaving the recent economic surge out of the picture. The average net salary of a university graduate is now 1612 euros per month, 324 euros more than a HBO graduate. After peaking in 2002, the average salary of starters has gone down again and it is now just above the 1999 level. Read more: Eurogates. Forum of education news

Bachelor International Hospitality Management scores high

The Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie, NVAO) in The Hague has granted the HBO Bachelor programme of International Hospitality Management (IHM) in Leeuwarden a positive evaluation. The accreditation testing to which the programme was subjected this spring demonstrated that IHM scored well in no less than seventeen points and that it obtained a sufficient score in four points. This provides the programme with an exceptionally high score that by far exceeds the national average for programmes accredited until now. Adjunct Chairman Klaas-Wybo van der Hoek of the Executive Board of CHN University Netherlands (CHN), is quite pleased about the result. ,,It is fantastic that we obtained such a high score. The high score was not only in the area of internationalisation but it was also a reward for our efforts to improve the quality of education.¿¿ IHM Leeuwarden is also highly appreciated by the students. Last year, IHM obtained a top position in the poll regarding the appreciation for educational programmes organised by the Elsevier magazine. Van der Hoek thinks that NVAO¿s positive accreditation demonstrates that the innovations that were introduced by the school were worth the effort. Read more: Eurogates. Forum of education news

Foreign doctors are leaving, members of Parliament warn

Members of the three coalition government parties asked Health Minister Hans Hoogervorst to prevent foreign doctors leaving the Netherlands for Britain and Germany. The complaint mainly relates to doctors who have been granted asylum in the Netherlands. Many find it almost impossible to get work here despite an expected shortage in the years ahead because of complicated rules and a long registration system. A new policy was introduced last year but MPs say it has only made the problem worse. Hoogervorst said it is too early to evaluate the effectiveness of the new system. Read more: Eurogates.
