'Internationalisation' in TU Delft

International MSc student Harish Karakat is a newly elected member of the Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) Faculty Student Council. The second-year MSc student from India is the first international student ever elected to the council, which now also conducts its meetings in English.

All too often the talk about  internationalisation' seems like one-way traffic: Dutch sacrificed for English; Dutch students must integrate with international students; and this country and the TU must better accommodate international students because, you know, they might be Holland's future  knowledge workers'. Yet somehow lost in this translation is the here and now; specifically, how international students enrich this university in ways other than tuition fee euros and cents.

The fact of the matter is that international MSc students are usually older and more mature than home-grown Dutch MSc students following the Bama track. Moreover, many international MSc students already have professional - often international - work experience, and hence arrive at TU Delft ready-equipped with the kind of vital interpersonal and intercultural skills that Dutch TU students need to learn.A perfect case in point is 30-year-old Harish (Hari) Karakat, a second-year MSC student studying integrated product.

Why did you decide to give up a successful professional career and return to university?

“Although I was working in IT, subjects like art, architecture and design fascinated me much more. Over the last few years of my job, I was simultaneously exploring options and experimenting with my abilities. Design was falling in line - it was time to quit my job and make the switch. Initially, I was reluctant to pursue a formal study program, but now I see that it does make a difference.”

Why TU Delft and not a university in Germany, where you’ve lived and worked?

“I applied to two universities in Germany and one back home in India, but I preferred TU Delft because the design faculty here is based on engineering and suits my background. And also of course because the IDE faculty is renowned throughout the world.”

As an older, more mature student, is it a challenge for you having to deal with young BSc or MSc students?

“Well, it’s manageable, at least with FSC students. Last year I took a BSc first-year course and there I could clearly feel the difference in maturity levels. On the other hand, some fellow MSc students surprise me with their immaturity.”

Research at InHolland University of Applied Science

Research at INHOLLAND University of Applied Sciences is organised in six Research and Innovation Centres (RIC’s) focusing on the following themes:

Global Cities
Education & Learning
Quality of life
Entrepreneurship
Business & Technology
Governance

RIC’s consist of research groups on specific themes.
INHOLLAND University of Applied Sciences has established itself since 2002 in the development, transfer and utilisation of knowledge through these research groups. The groups are headed  by so-called “lectoren”, professionals who have an established reputation within a specific field, most of them holding a PhD.

Many of these “lectoren” combine their work for INHOLLAND with appointments elsewhere. This enables them to keep in touch with the professional practice in their respective fields. This circulation of expertise stimulates and facilitates innovation in the professional world as well as in the educational programmes that INHOLLAND offers. In this way research contributes in developing the competencies of future professionals; students learn about the practicalities of the professional world by conducting research. Teachers as well as experts from outside INHOLLAND also participate in the research groups.

The RIC’s act as a bridge to knowledge - they bring up-to-date information from outside INHOLLAND and transfer information - usually the results of research – vice versa both at a national and at an international level. Research groups focus on research demands from small and medium sized enterprises, as well as the public sector and larger businesses. They also seek corporation with universities at home and abroad, next to bachelor and master programmes within INHOLLAND. More than twenty “lectoren” work for INHOLLAND University of Applied Sciences, in six different locations.

Things to consider When Taking an MBA

Your Master Business Administration (MBA) study abroad can be one of your most unforgettable and rewarding experiences or, a nightmare you want escape from. There are lots of things that can go wrong and jeopardize your MBA study adventure.

So even before signing that application form you may want to re-evaluate your current status and check if it is the right time. Below are few but very important points you may want to consider and hopefully it can save you some worries and troubles in the future:

  • Outline your expectations about MBA

For every target one must determine the things he need to achieve. Taking up business education specifically MBA programme can be a rewarding experience. Ask yourself:

  • “Why am I taking an MBA?”
  • Is it because you’re planning to start your own business?
  • Are you aiming for career advancement in international business?
  • Do you want to broaden your network by meeting fellow businessmen or foreign students?

Whatever your reasons you must have one; this will make you more committed and driven to give your best and finish the МВА programme. It will also ensure that all the resources you invested will not go to waste.

  • Evaluate your current work load

If not all majority of MBA students are currently working or managing their own businesses. So if you do be sure you can handle additional responsibilities. Taking up any MBA programme will definitely require you time, effort, money, and other resources. Do not forget that your current work or responsibilities may be affected once you started your business programme so managing your time is a key. There are various programmes you can choose from to suit your schedules and work.

  • Financing your MBA study

I do believe that taking up MBA programme is an investment and that is why it will cost you. The better business school and programme the more expensive it is. Be sure to check your savings if it can sustain your business study until you finish it.

Though there are a lot of schools that offer loans, scholarships, and other financial aid especially for international students. One of the worst things that could happen is you realized at the middle of your MBA programme that you cannot continue it anymore because of insufficient cash.

  • Choosing a school and program

This is one of the most crucial decisions you have to take. So you must be very careful and sure which european business school and MBA programme to take. You can check ranking of MBA schools and programs over the Internet. There are different organizations that prepare annual list of worldwide and regional rankings. Also you can interview students and alumni, ask for feedbacks and comments.

Look also for accreditation when choosing a business school and programme. This will somehow guarantee that your investments are worth the cost since an accreditation signifies meeting sets of standards.

In choosing the right MBA programme, check the curriculum to see if it is what you need. Different programmes have different subjects, number of years to take, academic exposure, class itineraries and of course cost.

The most popular MBA programmes are part-time, full-time, executive, international, distant, and online.
