Amsterdam University College: information session on 2 February

AUC is organising an information session on 2 February 2009!

Amsterdam University College (AUC) is a joint Bachelor (Honours) programme of two major research universities, the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam.
AUC offers an English taught international liberal arts and sciences programme.

University-level studies leading to a Bachelor degree

Dutch universities already offer a comprehensive range of excellent Bachelor programmes, but by establishing University Colleges they have succeeded in further widening the choice for students looking for top quality higher education in the Netherlands.

The University Colleges so far established by the Dutch universities tend to share the following characteristics:

  • University-level undergraduate studies
  • Three-year Bachelor (Honours) programme
  • Liberal arts and sciences approach
  • Small scale and selective
  • High tempo, demanding, intensive studies, taught in English
  • Dutch and international students living and studying together
  • Small classes, low student to staff ratio
  • Emphasis on personal tutoring/support of students

The University Colleges are meeting a demand within the Netherlands and abroad for more Bachelor-level programmes taught in English. Their liberal arts and sciences approach with its broad educational perspective is proving popular with both Dutch and international students alike.

The University Colleges have quickly been welcomed as a valuable addition to the Dutch higher education landscape, focusing on excellence at Bachelor level. Their students consistently give them the best scores in national surveys (such as Elsevier's annual review of higher education in the Netherlands), particularly for the level of education and the quality of the teachers. Their graduates have qualified for top-level postgraduate programmes in the Netherlands and abroad.

You are warmly invited to attend this session, where you can find out more about AUC.

Details will be published on our website Amsterdam University College.

Erasmus University: New insights into behavioral finance

New insights into behavioral financeBy applying insights form psychology and other behavioral sciences, behavioral finance helps to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional finance approach, which assumes that agents and markets are rational. In his thesis New insights into behavioral finance, Guido Baltussen investigates preferences of investors, their investment decisions, and the behavior of financial markets. He defends his thesis on Thursday 4 December 2008 at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Baltussen shows that people dislike downside risk and employ decision-making patterns that may result in risk-taking behavior of which they are not aware, or in which they normally would not engage, and that can result in non-optimal behavior. More specific, people change their behavior in response to previous outcomes, preferences are highly sensitive to the context of outcomes, and people tend to use simplifying heuristics to construct their investment portfolios. Furthermore, this thesis shows that incorporating behavioral-based preference patterns has substantial influence on investor's optimal behavior in financial markets.

Guido Baltussen's work has been presented at the top international conferences in financial economics and psychology, and is published in leading scientific journals like the American Economic Review and Management Science. He carried out his research in The Tinbergen Institute, a graduate school and research institute in economics, accredited by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). The Tinbergen Institute was founded by the economics departments of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) in 1987. Currently, some 100 research fellows and 120 graduate students participate in the Tinbergen Institute.

Jumpstart your career with European business school education

Studying at an international business school definitely adds credibility to your resume. Not only do you gain international exposure but you are introduced to different cultures and systems. This can only benefit you in the long run. Today’s market place requires individuals who are capable of not only surviving in the international arena but succeeding in it. Global companies are looking for people with an international business school degree to lead their regional offices. This is why it helps to study at a European business school such as Wittenborg in Holland.

What you can expect from a business administration course in a European business school

The business administration course will introduce you to the theory of the subject and give you a good foundation in accountancy, finance, marketing and management. This international business school degree is designed to give you a broad look at management and how things run in a business environment. In business schools such as Wittenborg, you will also learn languages like Dutch, Spanish and Chinese. Further, they will fine tune your intercultural skills and personal development.

Your core specialisation

Most international business school programs allow you to specialise in one or two areas. Ideally these should be subjects in which you are interested to build your career. A specialisation is an in-depth look into a particular field of study. You will also be expected to do research projects and complete modules pertaining to that subject. Your specialisation should make you an expert in that area and this will help you secure a job in that field. All these European business school degrees will have some sort of an exam that you will have to do in order to finish the course.

The final steps to placement

At schools such as Wittenborg Business School, the business administration program also contains several seminars that you could attend to extend the learning experience. You can choose the seminars that pertain to your study and interest level. These seminars are conducted once in a fortnight or could also be weekly. Often industry experts are invited to speak at these seminars so students can ask questions and learn more. At this European business school the last year of teaching concentrates mainly on preparation for work placement. Personal development programs are also conducted to ensure that each student is ready for the job. The goal of these courses is to make the student competent to handle work requirements right from Day 1.

Erasmus University: Erasmus University retains its 1st place in publications according to ESB-40

Erasmus University Rotterdam has once again attained the first position in the annual ESB Top 40 Economists list. Many EUR economists are among the top 40 most publishing economists and, among the participating universities, EUR is ranked as the university that publishes the most. EUR Professor Philip Hans Franse is number 1 on the list.

Every year the ESB publishes the names of the 40 top economists, which reflects on the international publications of economists associated with Dutch universities. In deciding who makes the Top 40 of 2008, ESB looked at the publication period between 2002 and 2006. For some, the Top 40 is also a useful instrument when it comes to distributing the scarce research funds of the various schools. A top position in the ESB also exemplifies that the university’s research policy promotes efforts that translate into these results.

With 60 publications in the relevant 5-year period, Philip Hans Franses’ output outnumbers that of his colleagues. It is also noteworthy to see that that the number of academics from the Erasmus University who have made it into the top 20 has doubled since last year. For the complete list, please refer to the website of the ESB (Economisch Statistische Berichten).

TU Delft: Science Port Holland Launched

From now on, students with a brilliant idea, small developing businesses and large international concerns looking for technological know-how, fresh talent and collaboration have a door to knock on: that of Science Port Holland. The Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Frank Heemskerk, managed to keep his feet dry when he attended the launching ceremony for this new science park between Rotterdam and Delft, even though there is little more than marshy wasteland to be seen right now on this site to the south of the TU Delft campus. The mayors of the cities behind the new venture, Ivo Opstelten of Rotterdam and Bas Verkerk of Delft, also retained dry toes thanks to generously distributed gumboots. In a futuristic tent along the A13 motorway, they, together with Dirk Jan van den Berg, Chairman of the Executive Board of the third party in the scheme, TU Delft, shared their future visions of Science Port Holland.

Heemskerk stressed the importance of innovation for the Netherlands seen from a business perspective. “The Delft/Rotterdam region has considerable pulling power. Collaboration within this region will be rewarded in terms of international allure. At this moment in particular the Netherlands must dare to invest in what the country does well,” Heemskerk stated. “There are, however, a number of basic stipulations for Science Port Holland. Government, the entrepreneurs and the researchers must allow each other sufficient room to move. In this way the development of this high-tech park will be bound to put the Netherlands firmly on the map.”

Under the leadership of panel chairman Jan Douwe Kroeske, Opstelten, Verkerk and Van den Berg discussed their views on the ambitions and the collaboration. Science Port Holland’s two high-tech industrial estates, near the NMi in Delft and at the Schieveen site near Rotterdam Airport, provide the opportunity for science and entrepreneurship to join forces. The two sites are near to renowned universities, namely TU Delft and Rotterdam’s Erasmus University.

Science Port Holland will focus particularly on groups that are already well developed within TU Delft and the Erasmus Medical Center and have gained an international reputation: industrial biotechnology, medical technology, sustainable energy, water management expertise, nanotechnology and mobility studies. In short, a focus on the global problems of the 21st century and the economic and innovative developments they engender.

The goal of Science Port Holland is the development of two high-level science parks where knowledge-intensive companies, national and international, can establish their Research & Development enterprises. Due to the proximity of one of the world’s largest seaports, the airport of Rotterdam and the high-speed rail link, Science Port Holland is in an excellent position to compete as an exceptional location for high-tech businesses in the Netherlands and Europe.

Maastricht University: Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs confirms quality

Maastricht University (UM) remains a leading Dutch university, according to the Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs 2009. Compiled annually by an independent team from the Hoger Onderwijs Persbureau (Higher Education Press Office), this guide to higher education helps high school students choose a study programme. Like last year, UM has come in third in the overall ranking of the 14 Dutch universities after Wageningen University (1) and the Open University of the Netherlands (2). In the category 'medium-sized universities', UM has been ranked first, before Tilburg and Rotterdam.

The Keuzegids rankings are formed on the basis of students' judgements (50%) and experts' judgements, contact hours with lecturers and percentages of graduates (50%).

Of the 15 UM programmes assessed, six are considered the best in the Netherlands: European Studies, Tax Law, Econometrics, Fiscal Economics, International Business and Knowledge Engineering. Second places were awarded to the University College Maastricht, International Law, Economics, Psychology, Medicine and Molecular Life Sciences. Arts and Culture comes in third, and Dutch Law and Health Sciences fourth.

Rector Professor Gerard Mols is delighted at UM's strong performance. "I'm proud that Maastricht University belongs to the top in the Netherlands once again. Although it has been for several years in a row, you never tire of success. I see it as a wonderful result of our focus on stimulating and developing talent. In Maastricht, that's in our genes."

In other rankings, too, UM regularly scores well, with the first four programmes included in the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) ranking last year ending up among the top, and UM placing a respectable 111th in the British THES ranking for universities worldwide.
