Placing saw teeth on the blades of wind turbines is now possible. The saw teeth are designed by Stefan Oerlemans of the University of Twente and the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR).

Rotating wind turbine blades make a characteristic whooshing sound. This noise often annoys those living nearby, so wind turbines are not always operating at full capacity and plans for new wind turbines are frequently rejected.

Stefan Oerlemans, PhD candidate at the Twente of University and employee of the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR), researched the sounds caused by wind turbines and created a solution to halve the noise without loss of energy.

To achieve noise reduction, saw teeth were placed on the back edge of the outer quarter of the blades (see figure).

University of Twente has two rates for tuition fees:

Students with EU/EEA nationalities and others who qualify for Dutch government study grants pay subsidized tuition fees, which are annually fixed by the state. For the 2009/2010 academic year these are € 1,620 per year.

Scholarships & Grants

The University of Twente has several scholarships for students completing UT postgraduate programmes. These scholarships vary from government grants to funding by organizations or private people. In addition, faculties and the University of Twente Scholarship Foundation offer a limited number of scholarships for excellent students.

All scholarships require that all UT application procedures are fully completed before applying for the scholarship. Because of strict deadlines, apply for admission at least two months before the scholarship deadline.

Applying for a scholarship is possible as soon as you have received a letter confirming admission. Please note some scholarships are for students of specific nationalities or studying certain educational programmes.

The Executive Boards of the VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam have agreed to jointly establish the Amsterdam University College (AUC), which will offer a top quality (Honours) liberal arts and sciences Bachelor programme, taught in English.

AUC is a selective liberal arts and sciences Bachelor programme offering interdisciplinary education. Broad-based scientific and social questions are at the heart of the curriculum. Students approach these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, working in international groups. Particular attention is paid to the sciences and to the development of academic skills.

AUC students are selected on the basis of their academic abilities and motivation. Some 200 have been admitted for the 2009-2010 academic year, out of over 400 applications. This level of interest shows that higher education of this kind - selective, intensive and on a small scale - is highly valued by prospective students.

About half of the first group of AUC students come from outside the Netherlands, hold dual nationality or have been previously educated abroad.

The objective is that AUC graduates will qualify for entrance into graduate programmes at top universities around the world. AUC focuses in particular on connecting diversity with excellence in an international and intercultural context, and make full use of its location in the multicultural city of Amsterdam.

The English Intensive Course (EIC) is designed for foreign students interested in following an English-language Bachelors programme at the HAN University of Applied Sciences / Arnhem Business School. This course will help you significantly improve your English while familiarising you with the Dutch education system and culture.

Why follow the English Intensive Course?

Many foreign students are interested in studying in the Netherlands. Despite starting out with motivation and determination, not all students are able to complete their studies and obtain diplomas. Sometimes language skills are the problem, even where English is the working language in the classroom.

The new English Intensive Course (New EIC) at HAN University of Applied Sciences has been redesigned for foreign students who would like to study in the Netherlands. The course will help students to improve their English considerably (the working language in class) and it will make them familiar with Dutch culture and our study culture.

Another plus is that students will be prepared for their foundation year by training their study and interpersonal skills.

Attending the English Intensive Course (EIC) before beginning a study at the Arnhem Business School will greatly increase your chances of successfully completing your study in the Netherlands.

Students will find their way around at school and their new surroundings during the course. Moreover, once in their foundation year, they will have adjusted to a way of studying that is required in the international foundation year. New EIC will also make it easier to get in touch with Dutch fellow students.

Lectures also cover Dutch culture and study skills. Classes are generally finished around 2.15 pm each day, leaving you sufficient time for studying. At the end of each lecture period (6 or 7 weeks of classes) students will be given exams developed by HAN University of Applied Sciences to evaluate whether they meet required skills levels.

Starting dates

The EIC begins each semester, starting in both September and February. Within 2 weeks of the start date you are still able to follow the course. A programme introduction will be held on the Thursday or Friday before the start date. The next EIC begins 31 August 2009.

There are two New EIC programmes:

New EIC^{6 months}: entry requirement is an IELTS score of at least 5.5 on all parts of the test. At the end of the course (after 6 months), students pass if they have reached a level comparable to C1 of the European Framework( IELTS 6 or higher).
New EIC^{1 year}: entry requirement is an IELTS score of at least 5.0 on all parts of the test. At the end of the course (after 12 months), students pass if they have reached a level comparable to C1 of the European Framework IELTS 6 or higher.

As New EIC is an intensive course, students must be prepared to work hard and attend a substantial number of classes. After each lecture period (6 or 7 weeks of classes) students will take exams developed by HAN University which match the level required of the students at that time.

Ministers are to take steps to combat the 'worrying' shortfall in the number of immigrants taking integration courses, the minister in charge, Eberhard van der Laan, announced on Tuesday.

By the end of July, just 20,000 people had signed up for the compulsory courses, well below the full-year target of 50,000.

And only 13 of the country's 52 biggest towns and cities are meeting their individual targets, the minister said. ' Integration requires newcomers to take part in society, through school, work and in their neighbourhoods,' the minister said. 'That is why we expect the new Dutch to do their best to participate in our society and that they seize the chances we are offering them.'

Van der Laan told MPs the government had already tried to make it easier for people to take up the courses. The budget has been increased by €460m over five years for integration projects, on top of the annual budget of €260m, he said. Steps had also been taken to improve the registration system and remove other obstacles.

Targets

New legislation requiring immigrants from outside the EU to pass an integration exam was introduced in 2007 but proved to be a bureaucratic nightmare Van der Laan said he now plans to require the rest of the biggest towns and cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, to make sure everyone who should attend a course is given one.

Some 80,000 people have still not been approached, he said. The minister said he plans to reclaim money given to councils who did not meet their targets between 2007 and 2009. Earlier this year, Van der Laan said he planned to scrap the €270 fee which everyone taking an integration course has to pay.

International Communication Management student Faten Zaghoul is telling about his study and working experience in the Netherlands: "After graduating from International Communication Management I started working as a junior communication officer for the WijkAlliantie foundation that focuses on intercultural dynamics in Holland's urban (and often problematic) neighbourhoods in the larger cities, with the goal of empowering and assisting citizens to improve their living environment.

I was responsible for the communication management policy in terms of the profiling of the foundations and its projects, its PR strategy and for the organization of the National Wijkbeurs convention.

The year after, I took up the Master of International Relations at the University of Amsterdam, part of the department of Political Science. I had to complete a pre-master year first in order to be accepted.

At this stage, I am finishing off my last exams before joining the research project of Global Poverty that is an organised project in which I will be able to write my Master thesis. I will definitely cherish this last stage of studying. I am looking forward to the travel plans and career moves that will follow in the future".

House prices in the Netherlands were 4.4% lower in July compared with July 2008, the national statistics office CBS and housing registry said on Friday.In June house prices fell by 3.7%.

All types of housing were hit by the fall, but detached homes were hardest hit, the CBS said. Prices fell everywhere in the country apart from Zeeland.

On Monday 31 August, Queen Beatrix will perform the opening ceremony of Leiden University's newly renovated Academy Building. The interior of the Academy Building has been completely renovated to reflect its status as a key location for official and ceremonial occasions. The roof construction - which had become damaged over the years - has now been restored.

Restoration

The Academy Building has undergone a thorough renovation. One of the main reasons for the urgency of the restoration was that the roof construction had been damaged by death watch beetle; the roof has now been fully restored. This initiated a major renovation project to upgrade the rest of the building. Part of the premises has been given a new layout so that it is more suitable for receptions and other official occasions. Much of the interior plasterwork, the ceilings, the floors and the technical facilities have been replaced. Many of the windows and doorframes have been replaced and the whole building - both interior and exterior - has been given a new coat of paint.

The heart of the University

The Academy Building is the oldest building of Leiden University , and forms the heart of the University. It is where students attend lectures and where they graduate; PhD researchers defend their dissertations here; newly appointed professors deliver their inaugural lectures in this prestigious building, and retiring professors hold their valedictory speeches here. It was the venue on 26 November 1940 for Professor Cleveringa's address in protest against the sacking of his Jewish colleagues by the German occupying forces. Cleveringa's protest is a most significant event in the University's history, as is witnessed by its commemoration each year in the Academy Building.

Bronze sculpture

The Queen will perform the opening ceremony by unveiling a bronze sculpture symbolising the presentation of the University to the city of Leiden by William of Orange in 1575. The unveiling ceremony will be preceded by a reception in the Great Auditorium for invited guests. Following a brief word of welcome by Rector Magnificus Professor Paul van der Heijden, Professor Henk te Velde will give an address entitled: 'William of Orange, a hero from history.' The chairman of the Prince William the First Memorial Foundation, Professor H.J.L. Vonhoff, will then give a brief talk on the inspiratin behind the sculpture.

"I have visited Amsterdam at the beginning of May 2009. I liked The Netherlands and Amsterdam in particular very much : people, culture, architecture of the city felt spiritually close to me.

After returning to Moscow, I decided to go back to Holland in the nearest future in order to learn its language. I began to look through the different internet sites dedicated to education in The Netherlands.

I found a few options, but the most detailed site was eurogates.nl. There are a lot of variants for study to be chosen. It is possible to study in different Universities not only in Amsterdam, but in other cities as well.

It could be courses of in-plant training or additional higher education or study of foreign languages. Duration depends on your wishes and the teaching term is not so limited - can be from a few weeks to a year.

I wanted to begin to study Dutch language, therefore I have chosen a language school in the center of Amsterdam named Easy Dutch Plus. Its course consists of different modules. Duration of a module depends on the intensity of lessons - from one to three times per week for three hours each.

I have chosen the first three modules since the private visa I could get is only for 90 days. If you want to study longer than 90 days you may need a letter from the university that they invite you to follow studies for a year and a confirmation of payment for it.

In my case I also requested a confirmation letter with original signature and a stamp regarding my arrival to The Netherlands with precise dates in it, and the accomodation letter about my residence during my stay.

On all questions I communicated directly with the administrator of the language school - Monica, and with firma "Eurogates". They helped me very much with advice on all questions about visa and other issues.

Now I live in a host family that lends me a room in their apartment. It is also possible to use the kitchen and the bathroom there. I study on Tuesdays and Thursdays at school. There are five people from different countries there : Australia, Argentina, Mexico and Poland. I really do approciate to study in this country and I am sure that it will be a good experience for me."

The EIU’s latest Worldwide Cost of Living Survey shows that the cost of living in Amsterdam is modest compared with cities like New York, London, Paris and Beijing.

Experience shows that to live and study in Holland for one year costs a student between 700 and 1,000 euro a month. This amount is needed to cover daily expenses, to pay rent, and for registration and tuition fees.

You cannot rely on finding a source of additional income after you arrive. The institutions have very limited funds for supporting students. If you are from an EU or EEA member state, however, you may be entitled to a regular student grant or to a refund of the tuition fees. For specific information, contact the IB-Group (Informatie Beheer Groep).

If you have an average student income – from a scholarship, for example – you will find that one-third of it will go towards housing. Food might cost you another third. Fortunately, most higher education institutions offer hot meals at reasonable prices. Many cities have pubs (eetcafé’s) where you can eat cheaply and well. But the cheapest way to eat is to do your own cooking. The remaining third of your money will go towards books, travel, and other expenses.

Some 1,750 participants are involved in the 11-day event in which gamers compete with each other from tents and caravans, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

The event is sponsored by British software firm Codemasters and IT company Getronics.

A new sort of primary school in the Netherlands is emerging which is open from 8am to 6pm all year round to give parents more flexibility, reports Wednesday’s Volkskrant.
The first such school opened in Zandvoort a year ago and is expected to expand from 38 to 65 pupils in the coming year.

A second, in Zwolle, will open on August 17 and in 2010 there will be a similar school in Ede, reports the paper.

Relic from the past

The schools are meeting a growing demand from parents who have problems with school times and the long summer holidays which are difficult to combine with working hours, the paper says.

Shortly before the summer recess, education secretary Sharon Dijksma pointed out that traditional school opening times are a relic from the past when children were expected to help gather in the harvest. According to the Volkskrant, Dijksma welcomes initiatives such as De School in Zandvoort which take into account that often both parents work and better match modern labour patterns. She does however stress that educational levels must be maintained and the legal obligation for schools to offer 940 teaching hours a year must be met.

The number of stormy days this month was double the normal July level says the weather institute KNMI on Friday. Despite the storms, July in the Netherlands was warmer and sunnier than normal for the time of the year, says the KNMI.

The KNMI recorded 11 days of storms this month and 22 days with lightning – with over 41,000 lightning strikes on 21 July alone.The average rainfall was 101 millimetres compared to a normal level of 70 millimetres. The last relatively dry July was in 2006 when just 29 millimetres of rain fell.

The average temperature in July was 18.2 degrees Celsius, slightly up on the 17.4 degree norm.

Toyota technical education programme expands in the Netherlands

The Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEP) received a boost in the Netherlands with the addition of a new training college, ROC Mondriaan, in The Hague. The Automotive Department at ROC Zadkine in Rotterdam has also been presented with a new Toyota AYGO vehicle to be used in T-TEP training activities. T-TEP is supported throughout the Netherlands by local Toyota distributor, Louwman & Parqui BV.

T-TEP was started by Toyota in 1990 with the goal of closing the gap between industry and education by providing support for technical education and to improve the image of skilled technical professions through direct and indirect communication. More than 450 educational institutions in 50 countries around the world are now part of the programme.

Each institution receives new learning tools from Toyota each year, including new Toyota models, as well as information about Toyota’s latest automotive technologies. Teachers also have the opportunity to receive training from Toyota, while the educational institutions are regularly invited to presentations and seminars organised by Toyota.

More people in the Netherlands switched jobs in 2007 and 2008 than the preceding two year period, says a report by the national statistics office CBS on Monday.The CBS says the figures indicate that job-hopping is more popular in a tight labour market.

Some 880,000 people moved to another job in 2007 and 2008 compared to 600,000 in 2004 and 2005. Most of these (25%) were young people under the age of 25.Labour mobility is less common in professional work where only 5% switch jobs.
