Number of Erasmus scholarships halved

Grants 28 April 2006, 13:33

The Erasmus scholarship is going up. In 2007, it will increase from 150 to 175 euros and by 2013 it will have risen to 250 euros. But because the budget for Erasmus scholarships is hardly increasing in proportion, far fewer students will be eligible. Nuffic expects the number of Erasumus scholarships to fall from 5,000 to 2,500 in 2007.

The Erasmus scholarships are part of the new programme for lifelong learning, for which the European Commission originally budgetted 13.6 billion euros for 2007-2013.

The intention was that the number of exchanges would triple and the amount of the scholarships would increase. However, only 6.2 billion euros has now been allocated to the lifelong learning programme, which means that there are 270 million euros available for Erasmus scholarships in the 31 countries involved in the 2007/2008 academic year.

That may be 20 million more than the budget for the coming academic year, but the budget also has to pay for new activities like the scholarships provided under the Joint European Masters Programmes.

The number of Dutch students applying for Erasmus scholarships has increased in recent years. In the 2004/2005 academic year, 4,743 Erasmus students went to study abroad. That growth will be neutralised in the coming years as fewer scholarships become available.
