Student of MA in International Leisure and Tourism Studies Elena Starkova tells: Nobody yet told you about Hestia? Ok, I will do it for you with a great pleasure.

student club, student lounge hestia, stenden universityOver the last 10 years, Stenden University has attracted a large number of students from all over the world. The name Hestia was chosen as the name of the student lounge.

Hestia is the Greek goddess of home and health. She was the eldest sister of Zeus, the eldest daughter of Rhea and Cronus; and she was the gentlest of all the Olympians. She is also the patroness of smaller domains. These attributes of Hestia symbolize the idea and mission statement behind the lounge. It is here that students may feel at home, where there is always positive energy! The lounge was founded on the 28th of November, 2002 and since then, has seen visitors from all walks of life and cultures. Hestia is a place for students from all over the world to come and make use of.

With a team of five students from different parts of the world - five hosts, Hestia is a good place for Dutch and international students to get to know one another and share stories about each other’s cultures. It’s a place to party and organize parties, a place to hang out and play games and watch T.V. or just to chill out and pass some time. Hestia is located near the bicycle shed at Stenden University so you won’t miss it.

We, all master students, were invited there last Friday to have a lunch. The hosts made for as really delicious food with macaroni, beef, different salads, sandwiches, drinks and even dessert! And can you imagine my surprise when among students I met our teachers! It’s so great when there is no gap between students and tutors. When you can just eat together and discuss what comes into your mind like future Olympic Games in Russia or try to find out what Dutch words we have in Russian lexicon that Peter I brought from Netherlands in 17 century.

It was all about lounge. And what about lessons will you ask. You think we don’t have any and just relaxing and having fun? Then you’d better check my next article.
