On Friday 13 February 2009 Nuffic officially opened its new Netherlands Education Support Office (Neso) in Moscow. Neso Russia is to give the education cooperation between the Netherlands and Russia a strong impulse. This relates to both student mobility as well as institutional cooperation.

Every year about 200 Dutch students go to Russia to study. Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences in turn receive about 500 students from Russia. There are dozens of cooperative ties between Dutch and Russian higher education institutions.

Dutch delegation

A delegation from the education field travelled to Moscow for the opening of the new Neso. Nuffic was represented by Communication Director Hanneke Teekens and Head of the Promotion department Han Dommers. They were joined by Anke Buitenveld, Director of International Policy at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Sijbolt Noorda represented the Dutch universities. The Dutch ambassador Jan-Paul Dirkse held a speech at the opening ceremony.

Seminar and master class

The opening ceremony was followed by a three-hour seminar for representatives of Dutch and Russian higher education at the Moscow Hilton. The connection between cooperation and exchange was a topic of discussion at the seminar.

In the same hotel Russian students got a taste of what Dutch higher education has to offer. They attended an MBA master class, set up by Neso Russia. One of the themes was: management in difficult economic times.

Network

Neso Russia is housed in the Russian State Library for Foreign Literature. The staff consists of Dutch director Charles Hoedt and three Russians. The new Neso is a part of Nuffic's international network of offices. Nesos were previously established in China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam and Korea. A Neso will be opened in Bangkok in the near future.

International higher education fair

On Saturday 14 February Nuffic/Neso Russia participated in the 15th international higher education fair in hotel Radisson SAS Slavyanskaya. The University of Twente, Fontys University of Applied Sciences and the Hague University of Applied Sciences were also represented at the fair.
