9 April 2009, (1519 views)

On Wednesday 8 April, the Solar Team Twente unveiled its new solar car design. This makes it the first team in the Challenge Class, the Formula 1 for solar cars, to present its design. Seventeen students developed the car as an independent group and used techniques that have not previously been seen in solar cars
.
On 25 October, the Solar Team Twente, with their completely new solar car, will be ready to start of the 10th Word Solar Challenge, a 3010km race through the Australian dessert from Darwin to Adelaide. Seventeen driven students from the University of Twente and Saxion have been working on the design for months. They put aside their studies for one and a half years to be able to work on this project fulltime.

This year the Solar Team Twente is participating for the third time. The team functions as a completely independent student company: They develop build and test the car on their own. They even search for sponsoring and cooperation with the business community.
Innovation

The aim the students set themselves this year was to build a lighter and more aerodynamic car than their previous solar car, and they succeeded! The new solar car has 25 percent lower air resistance and is considerably lighter.
