NHTV has come up with something new: the first academic Bachelor programme to be taught at an institute of higher professional education in the Netherlands.

NHTV has come up with something new: the first academic Bachelor programme to be taught at an institute of higher professional education in the Netherlands.

Since September 2009, NHTV’s Academy for Leisure offers an academic Bachelor in International Leisure Sciences (ILS).

NHTV is one of the largest and oldest institutes for tourism, leisure and hospitality in the world and, for many years, has played an important role as a source of knowledge and training members of staff for this sector.

Position in Europe

NHTV believes this step will further strengthen its position in Europe. In the rest of the European Union there is no clear differentiation between higher professional education institutions and academic higher education institutions.

The academic Bachelor in International Leisure Sciences is a very welcome supplement to the existing professionally-oriented Bachelor programmes, such as Leisure Management and International Leisure Management.

There is wide-scale interest in the new academic Bachelor in International Leisure Sciences, because in academic research an increasing demand exists for academically trained professionals in the area of leisure.

International Leisure Sciences is given in English

The academic Bachelor in International Leisure Sciences is taught exclusively in English. The programme is open to Dutch speaking students as well as English ones.

Academic literature is often only available in English and each academic has to be capable of writing an article in English. An extra requirement for students is that they are prepared to communicate in English. Then again, they will have highly motivated fellow-students around them and will work within an international setting.

It is a programme leading to a bachelor's degree in International Leisure Sciences. For years now, NHTV Breda University  has attracted many international students and therefore the programme will be offered entirely in the English language.

International Leisure Sciences will be academic and theoretical in nature and focus on multiple disciplines. This sets the programme aside from the existing higher professional education programme International Leisure Management.

The academic bachelor’s programme is in fact being transferred from the University of Tilburg, and will be offered by NHTV in a slightly different form.

The programme of the academic Bachelor in International Leisure Sciences consists of 3 years, divided into 6 semesters, each of which consists of 30 ECTS.

Exchange

During the third year students will be encouraged to take minor courses at universities abroad. Conversely, the intention is to attract a large number of international students to the programme.

Admission requirements

  • authorized certificates
  • motivation letter and CV
  • English language test (IELTS or TOEFL; score 6,5)
  • Non-European student: authorized residence permit

Master's

After obtaining the bachelor's in International Leisure Sciences students can transfer to a master's programme at a research university. Possible options are the universities of Tilburg or Wageningen, but also for instance the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
