In year 2 of the Windesheim Honours college students work on a International Business and Management project. The project revolves around a business case with a project proposal from an NGO from Africa. Students can decide for themselves whether they want to participate on site (i.e. in Africa) or act as back office from the Netherlands.

Last year a small group of local farmers in Kitui (Kenya) asked a local NGO for help. Our students were asked by the NGO to write a project proposal. The WHC students used a special method, the Gender Action Learning System approach to teach the farmers via pictures to make a SWOT analysis of their situation (because of their inability to read and write themselves).

It led to a situation in which the farmers ended up making an overview of their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities they could find to improve their economic situation. On the basis of the outcome of this analysis the students made a project proposal for which they are now trying to find funding so that the proposal can be executed.

This year, as of June 28th 2012, our students will visit Uganda, to help local NGO’s to set up a study/work project for local secondary schools. After finishing secondary education, a small percentage of students can go to University. By incorporating a practical component to the secondary school, students can learn a profession like hairdresser, carpenter, bicycle repairman or another profession, so they can improve their chances for a job after finishing their education.

Our students will interview the stakeholders to see what they can offer and contribute, and will then write a project proposal to acquire funds to execute this project.
