Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) has recently published its ranking of the top 900 universities in the world. These rankings assessed the scientific impact of universities by identifying how often they were cited in articles and reviews during recent years.
The Netherlands was represented by 13 research universities. Eight of them scored within the first 200 results, while 3 of them made the top 100.
Overall rankings
Utrecht University was ranked 67th, becoming the best research university in Holland. This university also became 42nd worldwide in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences, proving themselves as the best Dutch university in this category.
The top Dutch university in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities, the University of Amsterdam, became 77th worldwide and took 2nd place nationally. The University of Groningen was placed 94th worldwide and 3rd in the Netherlands and 38th in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The other Dutch universities in the top 200 were VU University Amsterdam (109th), Erasmus University Rotterdam (114th place), Radboud University (117th), Leiden University (129nd), and Wageningen University and Research Centre (196th).
Harvard University was ranked first overall, followed by the University of Toronto and John Hopkins University.
Rankings by fields of sciences
CWTS also publishes rankings of universities in various fields of sciences. This feature is meant to help prospective students choose the best university in the area they are most interested in. The list of these fields and the best Dutch universities in them according to the Leiden rankings are as follows:
- Biomedical and health sciences: Utrecht University (42nd in the world in this category), the University of Amsterdam (45th), Erasmus University Rotterdam (46th)
- Life and earth sciences: Wageningen University (4th), Utrecht University (45th), TU Delft (144th).
- Mathematics and computer science: TU Delft (73rd), TU Eindhoven (87th), the University of Amsterdam (252nd).
- Natural sciences and engineering: TU Delft (97th), TU Eindhoven (175th), the University of Groningen (200th).
- Social sciences and humanities: The University of Amsterdam (7th), VU University Amsterdam (17th), Utrecht University (23th).
