All 13 Dutch research universities were ranked within the top 200 results and 7 of them made it into the top 100 of the overall ranking. Six universities improved their last year’s results.

The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings reveal the top universities in the world every year, assessing and comparing institutions in five general areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income. The ranking is considered to be one of the most comprehensive and influential university ranking list in the world. This year’s results include 980 universities from all around the globe.

Global trends

US and UK universities continue to dominate the rankings in 2017, with the University of Oxford placing first, followed by the University of Cambridge in second and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in third.

This year three Asian universities made it into the top 30 for the first time: the National University of Singapore was ranked 22nd, Peking University tied for 27th place and Tsinghua University finished on the 30th position.
