Times Higher Education has recently published the 2016-2017 edition of its World University Rankings. All 13 Dutch research universities were ranked within the top 200 results and 8 of them made it into the top 100 of the overall ranking. Four universities improved their last year’s results.
The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings reveal the top universities in the world every year, assessing and comparing institutions in five general areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income. The ranking is considered to be one of the most comprehensive and influential university ranking list in the world. This year’s results include 980 universities from all around the globe.
US and UK universities continue to dominate the rankings in 2016, with the University of Oxford placing first, followed by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in second and Stanford University in third.
Global trends show waxing in Asian influences in the world of higher education. This year, 19 universities from this region were rated within the top-200, 15 more than in the THE 2015 ranking.
Standings of Dutch universities
All 13 Dutch research universities were ranked within the top 200 of the THE World University Rankings 2016-2017. Eight Dutch universities also advanced to the top 100, those are:
59. Delft University of Technology (˄6).
63. University of Amsterdam (˅5).
47. Wageningen University (˅18).
69. Erasmus University Rotterdam (˄2).
77. Leiden University (˅10).
80. University of Groningen (˅6).
86. Utrecht University (˅24).
94. Maastricht University (˅6).
The positions of Dutch universities have changed within the country as well. Delft University of Technology moved up by 3 positions and became the national leader this year. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) maintained its 2nd position, while Wageningen University lost 2 places and became 3rd.

The THE World University Ranking also assesses the quality of higher education in certain fields of sciences, identifying the top 100 institutions for each category. This feature aims to help prospective students choose the right university for their international education.
