University of Amsterdam offers scholarships for international students

The University of Amsterdam offers a number of scholarships to Dutch and international students. These scholarships are available for UvA Master’s programmes and can partially or fully cover tuition fees and living expenses.

These scholarships are available for UvA Master’s programmes and can partially or fully cover tuition fees and living expenses.

Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship

The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES) is a new scholarship programme sponsored by the university itself. It is offered as of September 1st, 2014 to outstanding non-EU/EEA students. Winning candidates will receive a grant worth € 25,000 which will fully cover all their study and living expenses for their year-long Master’s education.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students need to be within the top 10% with regard to previous study results and must have English test results equal to IELTS 7.0 or higher (with no scores less than 7.0).

If the selected Master’s programme is for 2 years, the AES can be extended for the second year of education if the student manages to complete at least 80% of the ECTS credits and achieves an average mark of 8 (out of 10) in the first year.

The application deadline for the AES is January 15th.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) is also designed for exceptional students from outside of the EU and is provided by the UvA's faculties. This scholarship can reduce tuition fees for a chosen Master’s course by € 2,000 up to € 12,000, depending on the programme and the student’s previous study results. For students of the Faculty of Sciences (FNWI), this scholarship is worth € 24,000 and covers all study and living expenses.

Requirements, amounts, and deadlines for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship vary per faculty.

Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarship

The Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarship (ASTS) is available for EU and Dutch students applying to one of the following Master’s studies at the Faculty of Sciences: Green Life Sciences, Gravitation Astroparticle Physics (GRAPPA), or Sustainability - The Molecular Approach. This scholarship covers all study expenses, as well as a portion of living expenses, for the duration of study programme and is worth € 10,000 a year.

The University of Amsterdam also participates in the Dutch study grant system and offers a number of country-specific scholarships in cooperation with the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic).
