New students at the Stenden Start WeekStenden University of Applied Sciences is known for its international programmes in Hotel, Tourism, and Events Management. This institution is also recognised for its Problem Based Learning approach (PBL) and the extensive support for new students that it offers. These features turn studying at the university into a great experience by helping students develop into highly skilled specialists that are capable of working in companies at any level.

Stenden’s quality of education can be seen in the accounts given by various students, staff members, and employers of Stenden graduates, such as the two testimonials given below.

Student’s view

Diana from Romania is a third-year student at Stenden University. She is enrolled in the International Hotel Management programme and describes her experience with studying at the university.

Home away from home

“My first impression of Stenden University was friendliness of people and the feeling of home away from home. I was not able to attend the Open Day so the university arranged a person to guide me around the school for a day and answer all my questions.

The students here get a lot of personal attention. You have a personal coach, a teacher who helps you with school related/personal problems in the course of your studies. Apart from that, during the first semester a host (a student who is already in the second year) helps you find your way at the university and the city. One week before the start of your programme, Stenden organizes a Study Start Week, when students can experience the PBL lessons, walk around the campus, get to know other students and have a nice time together going to the city and doing some other nice activities.

I personally think the study program is not difficult if you have a bit of discipline and start your assignments in time. The schedule is not really busy but it requires a lot of self-studying. The nicest thing about the program is that you get the opportunity to practice what you have learnt in a four star hotel that belongs to the university. You start working there during your first year and get to know every hotel department, the next year you become a supervisor and the year after you are promoted to a manager.

The city of Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden itself is a small cozy city with a lot of students from all over the world. It has some really nice places to go out and people here are very friendly. One advantage of Leeuwarden is that the accommodation here is cheaper than in other cities and it is easier to find a room.

I am completing my third year and I really enjoy studying here. I am currently busy with preparing for my internship and I am confident that the things I’ve learnt here will help me in my future career.”

Employer’s view

Stenden's campus in LeeuwardenStefanie Hardy, the Director of Business Development at the London Hilton on Park Lane, has been working with graduates from Stenden for about one year. There are four former Stenden students that are currently employed at the hotel, two at permanent positions after completing 10 month internships, and another two who are in the midst of their internship.

Here is what Stefanie says about Stenden’s students:

“Both the students who have been taken on permanently have proved to be outstanding team members. This is more commendable given the fact that as well as being new to the hotel, they were new to London and new to the UK! Due to their amazing work, we were keen to recruit more students from the university and so far, they have proven to be as excellent as the previous two.

I would highly recommend the university as obviously they are teaching the correct skills given the high calibre of candidate they turn out!”
