Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen features free massive open online course (MOOC) in Economics at an introductory level. This is the first time when such course is offered at a Dutch higher education institution, including both universities of applied sciences and research universities. The course will start on 3rd May, 2015.

This is the first time a course like this is being offered at a Dutch higher education institution, including both universities of applied sciences and research universities. The course will start on May 3rd, 2015 and will be taught in English with optional Russian, Chinese, German, or Dutch subtitles.

The MOOC, titled “Introductory Course in Economics at University of Applied Sciences”, will cover basic concepts in business, management, and economics. The course doesn’t require any prior background in these fields to enroll and will be useful for anyone who is motivated to learn something new or to prepare for a business-related Bachelor’s programme.

Upon course completion, students should feel comfortable with current economic issues, whether they come across them in their newsfeeds, work, or their daily lives. The course will provide pupils with the knowledge required to begin to understand the economic context of real world problems. Participants will also be able to apply this new knowledge in their own initiatives.

Course details

The introductory MOOC in Economics will begin on May 3rd, 2015 and lasts for 4 weeks. It will consist of small lecture videos ranging from 5 to 10 minutes in length, with about 1.5 hours of study content per week. Every week will be concluded with a quiz designed to help course attendees check what they’ve learned.

The course curriculum consists of the following core topics:

  • Week 1: Microeconomics: Fundamentals of supply and demand,
  • Week 2: Microeconomics: Perfect competition and monopoly,
  • Week 3: Macroeconomics: Economic performance and employment,
  • Week 4: Macroeconomics: Government intervention and trade.

Students who complete the whole course will receive an official statement of accomplishment signed by the Dean of the International Business School at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, Mr. Bram ten Kate, MSc.
