Students of the International Media and Entertainment Management programme at NHTV Breda UASThe first edition of “The Contributor”, an online magazine issued by students of the Academy for Digital Entertainment (ADE) at NHTV Breda University, was recently published. In this magazine, students revealed interesting facts and figures regarding programmes in media and game development. They also shared first-hand experiences about studying at the university.

The ADE offers two Bachelor’s programmes, taught in English. The International Media and Entertainment Management (IMEM) programme was launched in 2002. The International Game Architecture and Design (IGAD) programme became available to students four years later in 2006. Since then, both of these courses have prepared a lot of specialists for various branches of the media industry in the Netherlands and abroad.

In order to showcase some of their students, as well as teach other prospective students about the programmes, NHTV Breda’s ADE students have put out a new online magazine called The Contributor. This magazine features topics such as:

  • which specialisations IMEM and IGAD students choose while studying;
  • what areas of expertise they begin their careers in and in which countries they end up;
  • how many women work in the modern industry of video games and why their numbers growing;
  • finding a job in the creative industry after graduation;
  • study experiences abroad, such as the Media Production track at Northern Arizona University which includes shows made by IMEM students;
  • an overview of the most successful and entertaining student organisation within NHTV Breda University.

The ADE also offers two Master’s programmes for students wishing to continue their studies at NHTV Breda.

Learn from the experiences of current and past students

The magazine also contains many stories in which students and alumni of the IMEM and IGAD programmes describe their experiences while studying at NHTV Breda University and working after graduation. Students talk about how they found their first jobs, where they’ve relocated after graduating, how they were able to start their own business, or what convinced them to continue their studies at the Master’s level.

Here are few examples of inspiring student stories published in The Contributor.

Birgit Verhoeven, NHTV's IMEM graduateBirgit Verhoeven, IMEM graduate:

“After completing International Media and Entertainment Management I still had no idea what I wanted to do. After seeing a friend of mine being a TV news reporter, I suddenly knew what I really wanted... Today I work at Studio040 in Eindhoven and I have my own company called BIR Media. We work for clients like High Tech Campus, Maxima Medisch Centrum, SAP Nederland and many more. At my company I present TV shows and events but I also made a documentary called ‘PACLAX’, which will be shown on Omroep Brabant in the near future. This means that I now work as a reporter, presenter and video producer at the same time.”

Matthias Kapuvari, IGAD student at NHTV BredaMatthias Kapuvari, IGAD student:

“For me, it was always clear I wanted to do something with visuals. With the goal to study something in this direction in English in Europe, IGAD at NHTV was basically the only option for me… Choosing IGAD was a very wise decision and a valuable experience, as I learned what it truly means to be a concept artist in the complete game production process. The teachers are full of creativity and aim to inspire the students by motivating them to grow.”

Tino van der Kraan, IGAD graduate:

“During my time at IGAD, Elwin Verploegen and I started the foundations of a company together with a few other fellow students. After we graduated, we embraced the opportunity of running our own business considering that the risks were significantly low for us, and SassyBot Studio was officially formed. Now, a year and a half after graduation, we moved into two offices and still enjoy running this company!”
