Bridging programmes

Bachelor’s programmes at universities of applied sciences prepare students for a career. However, a professional Bachelor’s degree is often insufficient when applying for a Master’s programme at research university. To improve their academic skills and meet the admission criteria, students can complete a bridging programme which builds the necessary connections between Bachelor’s and Master’s studies.

In most cases, bridging programmes must be done at the research university that is offering the chosen Master’s study. It usually takes an additional year to complete such a programme. NHTV Breda is one of the few exceptions to this norm. This university of applied sciences offers two bridging programmes: Strategic Business Management and Marketing (SBM) and the pre-Master’s course for the Master of Science Leisure Studies programme.

Pre-Master programme: Strategic Business Management and Marketing (SBM)

Diagram of connection of Bachelor's, Pre-master's and Master's programmesThe SBM programme replaces the 4th year of a Bachelor’s degree. It is an Honours track, worth75 ECTS, which allows students to apply directly for Master’s programmes (Master of Sciences or Master of Arts) in Business fields at research universities in the Netherlands, UK, and Belgium.

Specialisations. Students of the SBM track can specialise in a number of areas including tourism, telecommunications, leisure, sports, culture, logistics, the media industry, and the public sector (for town planning).

The following institutions accept graduates of the SBM programme: the University of Amsterdam, Nyenrode Business Universiteit , Tilburg University , the University of Twente, Maastricht University (all NL), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and the University of Antwerp (both BE).

SBM track also facilitates access and compensates part of the pre-Master's programmes at other research universities.

Admission requirements for the SBM track are strict. Students must fully complete 3 years of a Bachelor’s programme at NHTV Breda (180 ECTS). They must also have excellent grades (top 10% of their class) and pass the intake interview. Students may also transfer into this programme from another institution.

See more details regarding the Strategic Management and Marketing pre-Master’s track on NHTV’s website.

Pre-Master programme: Master of Science Leisure Studies

The MSc Leisure pre-Master’s programme is a year-long separate course. It is completed after finishing a professional Bachelor’s programme and doesn’t replace the last year of study. This bridging programme is a perfect fit for students wishing to enroll in an academic Master’s programme in Leisure at NHTV, but do not yet meet admission requirements.

Course content. This pre-Master’s course consists of modules related to Leisure, Sociology, Innovation and Change, and Urban Development. Students learn to conduct scientific research by collecting and analysing data. They will also learn what is required to defend a graduation thesis. Upon course completion, students will have the knowledge and skills needed to enroll in the Master of Science programme.

Admission requirements. This pre-Master’s course requires students to have a professional Bachelor’s degree and good command of the English language. NHTV’s Student Office selects candidates based on the documents provided during the application process.
