In this survey, Nijmegen took 1st place, with 60% of respondents considering the city to be “safe” or “very safe”.

The survey was given to 1016 students living away from home in one of the seven largest student cities in the Netherlands. Respondents were asked whether they felt safe in their student city, factoring in how often student property was stolen or damaged when coming up with their answers.

Joining Nijmegen in the top 3 with scores of 53% and 52%, respectively, the student cities of Delft and Leiden were also considered to be safe.

Amsterdam was identified as being the least safe city. Only 14% of students said they thought the city was safe or very safe.

About Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands and boasts beautiful, ancient Dutch architecture alongside modern infrastructure. It features a green landscape and is intersected by the Waal river which connects industrial regions in Germany with the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It is also the warmest city in the country.

Of Nijmegen’s 170,000 citizens, 30,000 are students, helping to enliven the old city with youthful energy and enthusiasm. The city has a lot to offer to students, including various cultural centres, cafes, pubs, and quiet spots for self-study. An extensive network of public transport systems easily connect Nijmegen to other cities in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.
