Wittenborg helps students sharpen their skills

Question and Answers 27 October 2016, 08:29

Gaining new knowledge is an important part of studying, but only learning theory is not enough to prepare for a career. To convert knowledge into professional skills, it is important for students to be able to apply newly gained theory to real-life practice. That is why Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences combines lectures with project weeks, internships, and graduation assignments.

To convert knowledge into professional skills, it is important for students to be able to apply newly gained theory to real-life practice. That is why Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences combines lectures with project weeks, internships, and graduation assignments.

Project weeks

Bachelor’s programmes at Wittenborg UAS take 3 years to complete. This period is divided into 6-week modules, each of which has a project week. During the project week, students work on real-life professional issues provided by external companies and organisations. There are 12 project weeks in total, giving students roughly three months of practical experience.

Students of the BBA programme in Entrepreneurship and Small Business gain even more experience as they launch 2 training startup ideas, in addition to the regular project weeks.

Internships

An internship is another type of real-world practical experience offered at Wittenborg. During their last study year, students are already equipped with the skills necessary to work in their fields of expertise. The university helps them find temporary work placements in the Netherlands and abroad, completing a 6 month internship in a relevant workplace.

Many interns receive payment for their work. Although this payment cannot exceed a minimum wage due to regulations, it does provide students with some extra money that can help pay for tuition fees.

Internships are available to both Bachelor’s and Master’s students and contribute to the development of their professional confidence.

Graduation assignments

A graduation assignment, or dissertation, is a final project with a clear, useful result. A few examples of graduation assignments at Wittenborg include:

  • an in-house research project at a company;
  • a consultancy task for an organisation;
  • drafting up a business plan;
  • launching a real-life business startup.

Students often complete their graduation assignment for the company that they did their internship with. This allows them to enhance and expand their professional network while also increasing their chance to be hired there after graduation.

Focus on practical education

Practical education at Wittenborg University is the most important part of the institution’s study curriculum. By completing project weeks, internships, and graduation assignments, students gain professional skills that enable them to start a career as soon as they graduate.
