A lecture at VU University AmsterdamAs of 2017, VU University Amsterdam will offer a new Bachelor’s programme in Psychology, taught in English. The programme takes three years to complete and leads to a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree.

Why study Psychology?

Human behaviour is difficult to understand. What makes us happy or sad? How do we plan and make decisions? What are the characteristics of people that have healthy lifestyles? Psychology is the study that helps us explain what makes us who we are.

The new Bachelor’s programme in Psychology at VU will teach students the basics of this complex field while preparing them to further their education with a Master’s study.

What will students learn?

The BSc in Psychology programme at VU lasts for 3 years. During the first two years, students study general disciplines to get a basic understanding of the field. During the third year, they are able to choose a specialisation and complete their Bachelor’s thesis.

The available specialisations to choose from include:

  • clinical psychology,
  • neuropsychology,
  • developmental psychology,
  • cognitive psychology,
  • biological psychology,
  • and social and organizational psychology.

This Bachelor’s programme aims to prepare students for further study at the Master’s level. While a Bachelor’s diploma in Psychology is useful, it may not always be sufficient enough when it comes to finding a good job. As well, beginning a career at a research institution or working as a psychologist often requires a Master’s degree.

After completing the BSc degree, students can choose to continue with a Master’s programme in Psychology at VU or another university. A Master’s degree also grants students access to a PhD programme for those who want to pursue a doctorate in the field.

How to apply?

To apply for the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology at VU, students must have a high school certificate comparable to the Dutch pre-university certificate (VWO). They must also pass an English language test, such as IELTS, scoring 6.5 or higher.

The application must be completed online through the national system, Studielink, and through the university’s portal, VUnet.

The deadline for applying is May 1st, 2017. Please note that students who need assistance with finding accommodation should apply before April 1st in order to ensure their request can be processed.
