Detailed info

General information

Amsterdam University College (AUC) was founded in 2009 as a joint initiative between VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. The cooperation of the two research universities gave birth to this liberal arts and sciences institution whose purpose is to help undergraduate students prepare themselves for a higher education while developing their own individualised programme.

AUC is an honours college with strict selection criteria of its students based on academic performance, interests, and the motivation of candidates. Only about 20% of candidates pass the intake assessment. These selected students form a college community of about 300 students from the Netherlands and abroad.

As a residential college, AUC provides students with housing on campus, located in the Amsterdam Science Park, solving any accommodation issues for all three years of education. While living and studying separately from the other universities in Amsterdam, AUC students still have access to all of their facilities.

Specialization

AUC offers a liberal arts and sciences Bachelor’s degree programme, with the possibility to gain Honours recognition. The programme is taught in English and is open to Dutch and international students alike.

Students at AUC can take courses in a number of disciplines during their study. They choose a major in either the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities field in their first year. In the following years students take courses relating to their major while still having the possibility to choose elective courses to continue to broaden their education.

Educational approach

As a liberal arts and sciences college, AUC has a specific approach to its education. Students have the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of subjects in small international classroom settings. This provides them with the ability to interact with lecturers on a regular basis.

A key feature of a liberal arts education is the amount of freedom the student has in designing his or her own programme. With the help and advice of a personal tutor, students gain a broad background of knowledge about a number of disciplines while specialising in the subjects that are most relevant and interesting for them. This type of approach allows students to feel very connected to their education and ensures that their study is designed in such a way as to encourage the development of their personal skills, interests, and talents.
