General information
The history of Hanze UAS goes back to the year 1798 when the Art Academy Minerva was established. In 1986 Hanze UAS was formed through the merging of various vocational institutions in the city of Groningen and became what it is still today: a higher education institution with the focus on developing knowledge, skills and practical experiences which are needed to successfully enter the work field after graduating.

Specialization
With 18 different schools, each with their own set of bachelor and master programmes, Hanze UAS has much to offer. Students can decide between various study programmes taught in Dutch, English or German. Hanze UAS offers 10 fully English-taught Bachelor programmes and 9 fully English-taught Master programmes with an international focus.
The programmes vary from the business domain, to healthcare, engineering and arts. To name a few, Hanze UAS is home to the unique European Master in Renewable Energy, the Master in International Communication, and the Master in Sensor Application Systems. Hanze UAS is also home to the unique bachelor’s programmes Advanced Sensor Applications, International Physiotherapy, Game Design & Development, and Business, IT & Management.
Educational approach
Hanze University of Applied Science sets its focus on practical learning in addition to theoretical knowledge. Students learn to apply the theoretical knowledge on project work in multinational student-teams and work-placements. Students of the International Business and Management programme, for instance, have to write a business plan for a business and students of the International Communication write a communications plan for a band, which is meant to help it gain awareness.
Work placements and the strong ties Hanze UAS has to the business and industry sector also help students to get work-experiences during their study. This element gives graduates a competitive edge by making it easier for them to enter the workfield after their studies.
Hanze Honours College
About 50 specifications, tracks and routes of Hanze UAS’s degree programmes are designed for the most talented students of this university and form the Hanze Honours College. Their main goal is to provide these students with extra knowledge in their chosen fields, interesting assignments and work placements, and additional possibilities during studies, such as interdisciplinary projects with the students of other Hanze UAS’s schools and institutions.
University graduates with a honours programme on a diploma have more value in the labour market and can find a better job since the very beginning of their professional career.
Prince Claus Conservatoire
Another large Hanze UAS’s branch consist of Bachelor and Master programmes related to Jazz and Classical Music. These programmes are taught in the Prince Claus Conservatoire, which is also located in Groningen, and prepare students to become skillful musicians, composers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and music researchers.
Education here is strictly personalised. To enter music courses students must prove their abilities, passion, and ambitions. Such selection guarantees maximum attention to each students and their development in a tailor-made way. Along with music skills students also progress in communication and entrepreneurship to fulfill themselves as a comprehensive specialists.
Prince Claus Conservatoire collaborates with more than 30 well-known conservatories around the world. This collaboration not only gives their students an option to spend part of their education abroad, but also facilitates starting of their professional career upon graduation.
Academy Art Minerva
Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen also prepares international specialists in creative professions such as artists, designers, and performers. English-taught programmes in these fields are offered in the School of Fine Arts, Design & Pop Culture MINERVA, located in Groningen and include Bachelor’s and Master’s in Fine Arts, Painting, Interactive Media & Environments, Scenography, and a minor in International Pop Culture.
As a part of the vocational university, Academy Minerva first of all focuses on practical knowledge and professional approach. Most of education here is made in academy’s studios through applied training with the guidance and support of university teachers.
Students of the Academy Minerva not only sharpen their craftsmanship, they develop into creative artists and entrepreneurs able to generate new ideas and concepts, to contribute to society, culture, and economics, and to shape the environment.
Summer School
With a variety of short courses, Hanze UAS’s Summer School is the right place to enhance your knowledge in certain fields, such as business, communication, and languages. You will not only delve deeper in your field in interest, but will also get insights useful for your career.

Awards and Rankings
The Elsevier 2016 Ranking placed Hanze UAS on the 4th position among Dutch broad universities of applied sciences. The university's Internation Business and Management (IBMS) Bachelor's programme was rated 2nd within its ranking category.
In the Keuzegids HBO 2017 Rankings, Hanze UAS made it into the 3rd position amoung larger universities of applied sciences in Holland. The university scored for 63.5 points, only 4 points behind the category leader.
In 2016, U-Multirank placed Hanze UAS within the world top 25 for its applied research.
Hanze UAS has also received a positive feedback from Dutch and international students in 2014. The StudyPortal research awarded the university a Certificate for Excellent International Student Satisfaction. It became the only professional university in Holland to receive this award.
