Detailed info

General information

Stenden University of Applied Sciences has two Dutch campuses in the cities of Leeuwarden and Emmen. Its roots go back as far as 1845.

Stenden is a dynamic institution with around 11,000 students, of which 25% come from abroad. This makes Stenden one of the most international places to study in Europe. Stenden also has a very international network with more than 100 partnering institutions located in 20 countries around the world, including Canada, France, the UK, and the United States. Students can take advantage of this international outlook by spending a half or a full semester at one of four campuses abroad, earning a paid internship during the last one or two years of their programme, or taking part in an exchange programme.

All Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at Stenden are accredited by the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO).

Specialization

Stenden University of Applied Sciences is the largest in Europe in terms of hotel management and tourism management studies. There are also management programmes in the fields of business, leisure, logistics, media and entertainment, and retail. All programmes are designed and assessed by an advisory board of leaders within these fields in order to ensure they are meeting the needs of each industry.

The curriculum at Stenden places great importance upon practical experience. Students can gain work experience through the ‘Learning Companies’ within the Stenden institution, as well as through the many internships offered.

Students gain theoretical knowledge through regular teaching and practical hands-on experience by working on real assignments from external customers and receiving training as part of a professional organisation. Each programme at Stenden has its own Learning Company or another form of a practical component. This combination of academic and practical knowledge and experience provides students with the essential skills necessary to become successful members of any team in the international job market. The Learning Companies at Stenden include the four-star Stenden University Hotel which features restaurants, a conference and event centre, as well as the university canteens, and the learning studio for media productions.

The internships offered at Stenden also emphasize the importance of practical experience. Students that are enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme at Stenden will spend a large portion of it participating in a paid internship at one of the many businesses Stenden has partnered with from all over the world. Students can intern in countries such as Canada, France, Germany, the UK, or the US to gain work experience within their field of study and often have the option to start their career in the intern company upon graduation.

Educational approach

Stenden was the first university in The Netherlands to apply the problem-based learning (PBL) approach to its education and is recognized as a leader in this area. Students meet in groups of 12 to 15 twice a week to work on solving real-life cases and problems. These meetings are guided and supervised by a tutor to ensure that learning goals are met. Alongside these PBL sessions, students also participate in workshops, lectures, and presentations as part of their programme.

Another unique feature at Stenden is the Stenden Grand Tour in which participating students are able to complete part of their programme at one of four international campuses. Around 400 students participate in the Grand Tour each year, becoming acquainted with different cultures and customs in an intercultural and international environment. Students can choose to go to a campus in Bali, Qatar, South Africa, or Thailand as part of their Grand Tour experience.

Awards and Rankings

The 2016 Elsevier ranking placed Stenden on the 7th position among broad universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. Stenden was also rated within top 10 in the Keuzegids HBO 2017 ranking among Dutch medium-sized vocational institutions.
