The University of Amsterdam originated from an educational institution founded in 1632 called the Athenaeum Illustre. Through the years it has grown to become the University of Amsterdam as it is known today.
UvA, as it it also called, is one of the largest research universities in Europe with over 30,000 students, more than 6,000 staff members, and a yearly budget of over €600 million. The campus is located in the centre of Amsterdam with faculties and buildings being spread out throughout the city.
UvA has partnered with the other large research university in Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, to create the Amsterdam University College. This liberal arts and sciences institution helps undergraduate students foster their higher education.
