Detailed info

General information

The University of Amsterdam originated from an educational institution founded in 1632 called the Athenaeum Illustre. Through the years it has grown to become the University of Amsterdam as it is known today.

UvA, as it it also called, is one of the largest research universities in Europe with over 30,000 students, more than 6,000 staff members, and a yearly budget of over €600 million. The campus is located in the centre of Amsterdam with faculties and buildings being spread out throughout the city.

UvA has partnered with the other large research university in Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, to create the Amsterdam University College. This liberal arts and sciences institution helps undergraduate students foster their higher education.

Specialization

There are seven faculties at UvA: economics and business, humanities, law, medicine and dentistry, natural sciences, and social and behavioural sciences. Each faculty works towards the goals of research and teaching, as well as of innovation and social responsibility.

Educational approach

UvA strives towards a vision every four years, creating a strategic plan that helps achieve specific objectives. For the 2011-2014 vision, the key objectives are to continue improving study success and academic development, to link both Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes to teaching and researching, to create an increasingly ambitious academic culture, and to make room for both differentiation and specialisation within programmes.

Students at UvA learn in multiple ways. Tutorials provide them with the opportunity to discuss readings, work on assignments, and write papers. Practical training in some programmes exposes students to lab work, experiments, or actual procedures, helping them learn using a more hands-on approach. Fieldwork is also included in some programmes, helping students perform their research in a setting outside of the classroom.

Awards and Rankings

In 2016, UvA achieved the following ranking results:

  • 63rd in the Times Higher Education World University ranking.
  • 57th in the QS ranking, the highest-ranked Dutch institution.
  • 101-150 group in the ARWU (Shanghai) ranking.
  • 68th in Leiden Ranking.

In terms of specific fields of sciences, University of Amsterdam performed best in Social Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Medicine, and Life Sciences. UvA's Communication and Media Studies programme was ranked 6th in the world (QS ranking).
